I started my business one year ago, so the other day I was doing my financial planning for this upcoming year.
When I calculated my earnings, I realized I’ve tripled my income.
I’m proud of myself, but I’m not here to talk about me, I’m here to tell you how I did it.
DISCLAIMER****
Before I get into the tips, I want to emphasize that I went nine months with almost no pay off. The only indication that I was moving in the right direction was the quality of my work and a feeling in my gut.
I’d like to add another disclaimer that this is just how I did it, yes there are other ways and yes this might not work for you, the same thing happened to me. I just keep failing over and over again knowing volume will always negate luck.
If you choose to go down the same road I did, the general rule is to expect it to be twice as hard and take twice as long. I don't say this to scare you off, but I say this because so often we walk out of situations disappointed because well…
We walked in delusional.
My five steps to a better income.
Make a Podcast
My first big pay check came as the result of starting a podcast.
One of my guests ended up hiring me after I offered him 7-weeks of work free as a thank you.
He put me on a project that took way longer than 7 weeks and decided he liked my work.
He’s still my client today.
My podcast has been an amazing way to learn more about editing and connect with people.
If you want to start a podcast I have a video on it here:
Friend of a friend
Another client came through someone I was working with.
They needed help fulfilling their work, and they knew my work was good.
They had me step in and work with their client who I now have recurring revenue from.
I put myself out there
I’ve gotten a decent amount of money from putting myself out there.
I actually got $2,000 and a free trip to Vegas the other week because I was an extra on a show for three days.
I applied because I saw the casting while I was doing research and submitted a photo.
There’s always money up for grabs if you’re looking, I got extra cash from not being afraid to take it.
I posted to LinkedIn
I’ve gotten clients through regularly posting through LinkedIn.
I was able to demonstrate through my actions that I was doing what they wanted to do, so they hired me to coach them through inbound leads.
I invested in myself
I’ve spent over $10k this past year on coaching and courses.
I dropped $1.5k on a call with Lara Acosta to get advice on an account I wasn’t sure about.
I’ve called Tanya Wilkinson in a panic many times and she’s kept me going on the right path.
I’ve taken courses from Adley, Sean Cannell and Luke Matthews.
I’ve splashed for the VIP tickets at a conference.
I haven’t regret a single penny because life waters the seeds you plant.
There’s my advice.
It’s pretty simple.
Not easy, but simple.
Happy and grateful to be where I am.
Trying to figure out how to give back to you guys, if you have any ideas for giveaways let me know.
Thanks for all your support. I’m rooting for you always,
Laura Mai
